Stephen Miller's war on democracy isn't just happening inside the Trump administration - his extremist allies are pushing it on the outside, too.
A far-right legal group co-founded by Miller is trying to impose a national “show your papers” rule that is taken straight from the GOP's failed anti-voter SAVE Act. It will force Americans to show costly documents like passports or birth certificates JUST TO REGISTER TO VOTE.
It's yet another voter suppression scheme that could silence millions of eligible Americans. Miller's allies have already flooded the Elections Assistance Commission (EAC) with thousands of comments.

Let’s be clear about what’s happening here: Trump and MAGA think they can’t win free and fair elections – so their plan is to make voting harder for the people who would vote them out. Their unpopular SAVE Act already failed in Congress, and this “show your papers” tactic was blocked by the courts when Trump tried to impose it by executive order.
That’s why they’re trying to sneak this rule in through the back door. WE HAVE UNTIL OCTOBER 20 TO PUSH BACK. Let's work to STOP this voter suppression scheme in its tracks.
I'm against requiring citizens to submit a passport, birth certificate, or other citizenship documents to register to vote! Only half of American citizens have a passport and 69 million American citizens don’t have a birth certificate with their current legal name on it, most of them women who changed their names when they got married.
I’m an American citizen and I’ve been voting for years. Like half of all Americans, I don’t have a passport – I’ve never needed one. If you agree to this, you’ll be making it harder for me to vote, and blocking millions of other Americans from voting. Please don’t go through with this.
From closed polling places to limited voting options, it is already harder for citizens in the South to vote. Adding a requirement that we show a passport, birth certificate, or other citizenship papers to register will make it even harder. We fought and defeated poll taxes and literacy tests decades ago – please don’t make a change that would take us backward.
I'm an American citizen and I’ve been voting for years. This proposal would make voting harder for millions of eligible citizens like me in the South and across the country. It would require us to show a passport to register, even though half of Americans don’t have a passport. In fact, in North Carolina where I live, 57% of citizens DO NOT have a passport. This proposal would block millions of Americans from voting, especially in the South. Please don’t go through with this.
Republicans are scared of losing, so they're cheating. We've seen redistricting battles play out across the country – and now the fight is coming to North Carolina.
We need to be outside the General Assembly. A seat in the US House of Representatives is on the line.
Last month it was reported that President Trump was pressuring Senate Leader Phil Berger to draw new maps favorable to congressional Republicans in exchange for a political favor. Now Senator Berger said "we will hold votes in our October session to redraw North Carolina’s congressional map."
We are gathering to send the GOP a message: North Carolinians are watching and we’re not backing down.
